Case Study: Cubby Construction

Cubby Construction: building solid IT foundations to support a growing business with many projects

Modern construction, civil engineering and joinery is as reliant on technology as the next industry. So, for an ambitious and fast-growing business like Cubby Construction, having an IT and technology services provider that’s reliable and responsive is essential.

When they came knocking on Atom’s door in 2023 with an emergency IT issue, we were delighted to swing into action – and the relationship’s gone swimmingly ever since.

“Working with Atom is completely collaborative. They’re always at the end of the phone when we need them. Not only do they respond promptly to any issues, but they’ve also taken the time to get to know us, which builds trust. That peace of mind is priceless.”

– Kate Jackson, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Cubby Construction

With over 50 years’ experience operating across the UK, Cubby Construction is well-known across the North of England and Scottish borders. Their extensive list of clients includes Scottish Water, The Ministry of Defence, Center Parcs, The Church of England and Lake District National Park.

Thanks to recent investment and rapid expansion, it’s been more important than ever to the Cubby team that the organisation is connected and secure – even when teams are working on a diverse range of projects in different parts of the region.

As Head of Marketing and Business Development, Kate Jackson, explains, making sure every site has secure and reliable connectivity is essential for a modern construction site:

“This is period of change for us, including a lot of investment in IT. We have a head office in Carlisle but we are also establishing a number of satellite offices as part of our acquisition of other businesses.

“In addition, our teams can often be found working on-site in remote locations where they need fast, reliable and secure connectivity in order to run day-to-day operations. We run on a lot of software packages, including accounting, transport and commercial. Everything is driven by IT, even on site, so it’s vital that everything just works when we need it to.”

Cubby Construction first reached out to Atom in November 2023, following a bad experience with another IT company. Kate says,

“Under our previous tech support, we suffered a lot of downtime, which was both incredibly frustrating and also hindered productivity. The final straw was when our whole system shut down and we couldn’t get back up and running after 48 hours – despite having a Disaster Recovery Plan in place.

“At this point, we rang Dean Cowens (Atom’s Managing Director) and asked if his team could help. Atom got us back in business within a day. After that, we made them our only provider.

“They rebuilt our entire system, helped us migrate to the cloud and introduced us to a shared drive. And so, we’ve retained Atom’s services ever since because we always know they are there when we need them most.”

Flexibility and friendly faces

As a fast-growing business, Cubby Construction is constantly scaling as new projects come online and teams are deployed to different areas of the North of England and up into the Scottish Borders.

With such complex logistical and operational challenges to overcome each week, Cubby is a business that can quite simply do without technology hassle and headaches – in terms of telephony and connectivity, IT hardware or software solutions.

Kate says:

“Atom helps us to scale effectively at short notice. It never feels like they are trying to get as much money as possible from us. They tailor everything based on what we actually need. In fact, when we met with an investor who wanted to know about our IT systems, they were so impressed that are now considering working with Atom in the future.”

She continues,

“As we’re in the process of acquiring businesses, this poses us with new challenges and a lot of work, which Atom is happy to help with. We’re all busy with the day-to-day running of things, so it’s great to have Atom there to handle the tech side. We don’t have an in-house tech team; it’s all Atom.”

In Kate’s own words, the team at Cubby are “not the most tech-savvy”, something we were more than happy to help with:

“Atom visits us in our Head Office twice a month to deliver support and training, often giving us step-by-step guides and explaining things to our teams in clear, easy-to-understand language.”

We have also supported Cubby Construction in achieving Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001 certification, which are essential for organisations like Cubby that regularly need to go through rigorous tendering processes where security and business processes are valued highly.

Speaking on the working relationship with Cubby Construction, Atom Managing Director, Dean Cowens, says,

“We always strive to build trust between ourselves and our clients, and it’s been a pleasure to deliver a personalised service to Cubby Construction. The faith that Kate and the rest of the team have placed in us is always appreciated and we try to reciprocate by being as agile and responsive as we can to their dynamic working requirements.

“Technology is now at the heart of their construction work and we have a responsibility to help them stay online, productive and able to meet their deadlines as required by their clients.”
